Germany increases deportations to Iraq
New agreement allows for more deportations
For years, Germany has been trying to increase the number of deportations to Iraq. In the first months of 2023, a new agreement was reached that allows for more deportations. The first plane with deportees has already left Germany. Up until 2022, only convicted criminals were deported to Iraq.
Problems with identity verification
In the past, deportations have often failed because of problems with verifying the identities of the deportees. In March, the German government had declared that deportations of Yazidis to Iraq were unreasonable.
