Immediate Evacuations Ordered

Residents told to leave homes due to wildfire

Residents in the New Mexico village of Ruidoso were told to immediately flee Monday because of a wildfire that was discovered west of the village, according to the Village of Ruidoso Facebook page. The wildfire, which was first reported at around 10 a.m. local time, has prompted the evacuation of all residents and visitors.

Though Ruidoso is home to only about 8,000 permanent residents, the area attracts a flow of recreational tourists with winding trails and vast parks. The wildfire is burning in an area that is popular with hikers and campers.

Eastern New Mexico University, which is located in Ruidoso, has also been evacuated. The university has closed all of its campuses and has asked students to evacuate.

The New Mexico State Police is urging residents to follow the evacuation orders and to stay away from the area of the wildfire. The fire is still burning out of control, and firefighters are working to contain it.

The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation.
