Index Highlights Correlation Between Democracy and Peace
The Democracy Index, published annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), provides a snapshot of the state of democracy in 165 independent states and two territories worldwide. The index measures various aspects of democracy, including electoral processes, political pluralism, civil liberties, and government effectiveness.
According to the latest report, India remains the world's largest democracy, despite being classified as a "flawed democracy." The index also notes that the number of voters participating in national elections is expected to reach record levels in 2024.
The report further highlights a strong correlation between democracy and peace. Countries with higher democracy scores tend to have lower levels of political instability and conflict. Conversely, countries with low democracy scores are more likely to experience political violence and war.
